Everything I Learned About Nutrition, Once I Got Healthy

There is no magic pill. Any 30 day promise is most-likely too good to be true. It takes work! Lift heavy weights; properly—learn how to do that. Overall nutrition IS the instant magic pill that makes your weightlifting and fat loss successful. It takes effort, consistency and discipline. Get going and get serious. THIS will transform your body, overall health and mental state because you will look and feel soooo much betterer. Let’s go! Inflammation, be gone! Joint pain, go away! Type-2 diabetes, disappear! And much, much more…

Sleep at least 8 hours each night, drink good [purified] water, try intermittent fasting [only eating during an 8-hour window each day] and do the following:

I don’t use all this stuff, but a lot of it. It is kind of Paleo plus other reasonable stuff. Since we are all wired a little differently, you have to test things. What kind of food works well for your energy and nutrition? We are highly tuned performance vehicles that need the right fuel for energy, strength and health. Experiment and tweak things to make you strong and pain free. This is a quick summary of things I focus on as an old man wanting to pack on muscle and reduce body fat:

Alcohol – very little beer or hard liquor. I like red wine, so this is my vice that I still allow and consider it my dessert [carbohydrate] ~2 days per week.

Algae – if you want this weird crap, you will probably need to get this in powder form so look for raw or low temperature processed varieties of blue-green and brown.

Almonds – go nuts for the aminos. Go plain, raw, unsalted.

Aluminum Foil – use it for wrapping and storing opened cheese but do not cook with it since it can enter the food you eat which may enhance onset of alzheimers.

Apple – a good pre-workout food with antioxidants: loaded with fiber to promote digestive health; great source of antioxidants and electrolytes.

Apple Cider Vinegar – 2 tablespoons per day is good for gut health. You can make a water drink with this, plus some lemon juice and cayenne pepper to get your stomach rolling in the morning.

Avocado – good fats, nutrient boosting abilities so you can absorb other fat-soluble stuff you eat.

Banananananana – small ones or half a large one each day. Loaded with potassium and electrolytes; contain inulin and prebiotics, a healthy fiber that promotes probiotic growth and promotes digestive health.

Beans – a little dab will do. I can only eat like 3 black beans before I have fiber disasters. TMI!

Beef – yes, please. Green-fed is best because they ate stuff from the pasture their whole life without the fattening grains and junk that have a negative effect on you. Grass-fed may only consume grass part (minimum of 1/3) of the time and grains could be a major portion of their diet. Eat lots to build muscle.

Berries – yeah, baby! Blue, black, rasp, Indian Gooseberry [aka amla]. Keep all fruit consumption to 1 cup per day since that is still a lot of sugar; even though, it’s the good kind.

Bread – flourless, sprouted; Ezekiel bread or similar. The rest is not good for you. Gluten is garbage for your gut. Whole grain foods are often disguised as healthy but are not.

Broccoli – it will make you sexy just like these will too: cabbage, bok choy, kale, collard greens, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and other green leafy vegetables.

Butter – grass-fed is better; find the stuff with no junk added.

Celery – It is great for gut health and getting that bacteria in there to work correctly.

Cheese – a little once in a while; find some clean, pure stuff made without a bunch of weird chemicals in processing plants.

Chocolate – needs to be non-alkalized to be a good polyphenol. I add pure cocoa powder to my protein powder for the antioxidant and thermogenic affects. I have a supply of raw unsalted nuts that I throw in little pieces of chocolate that are from the highest % of cocoa bars I can find and break or chop up [baking bars are 100% cocoa and less pricey than fancy candy bars], this avoids the sugar and other chemicals added to chocolate to make it taste better.

Cinnamon – get Ceylon Cinnamon. Mix with natural honey and use as a facial cleanser to fight acne. In food this can actually help people with diabetes and be as effective their prescribed medicines. Thermogenic: I add this to my protein powder.

Cinnamon oil – has been shown to help balance blood sugar and has an incredible aroma.

Clary Sage oil - Clary sage’s biggest benefit is that is helps balance out estrogen in the body. If you have infertility or estrogen cancer, clary sage helps balance out your estrogen levels and hormones.

Clove essential oil - #1 herb in antioxidant value

Coconut – just do it; in every raw, pure form: flakes, flour, milk, sugar, water, oil… They contain MCFAs (Medium Chain Fatty Acids), a type of healthy fat your body uses for fuel.
Coconut Oil – Get extra virgin. I use it in my coffee, as a non-stick base when frying up steaks, chicken or fish in a pan. 3 tbsp. each day is also great for building muscle and decreasing body fat. I use it as a lotion on my scalp and under my eyes daily and on dry skin; when I think of it.

Cod Liver Oil – [Garden of Life brand] fat soluble antioxidants

Coffee – I am not energized enough to make bullet-proof coffee in the morning with a blender and don’t like the butter residue aftertaste, so I just stir in a teaspoon or 2 of coconut oil into my first cup of the day. I have about 20oz per day of mostly black coffee; no sugar because it is dehydrating & fattening, other phony sweeteners and absolutely no stinking creamers because they are merely soft plastic—yuck! Plain, unadulterated, unfiltered coffee either cures or prevents everything! Ha!:
                https://authoritynutrition.com/coffee-brain/

Corn – I haven’t seen any of the healthy doctors publish anything about eating it. I guess it’s unnecessary. Do not use the oil or anything that has its byproducts in them like corn syrup, etc.

Dairy – as fresh as possible; nothing mass produced and not even the organic stuff since they are all pasteurized, cooked, additivized to the max. Search for raw. How about some cultured dairy like greek yogurt, amasai and kefir? Awesome superfoods.

D3 (more than a Vitamin, it’s a prohormone) - It affects “the adaptive immune system, the innate immune system, insulin secretion by the pancreatic β cell, multifactorial heart functioning and blood pressure regulation, and brain and fetal development.” [Dr. Axe]

Eggs – one of the best bioavailable sources of protein. Pastured or free-range eggs have up to 20 times more omega-3 fats than factory hen eggs, more vitamin A, less saturated fat and less cholesterol.

Eucalyptus essential oil – improves respiratory health and fights sinus infections. Also, it decreases mucus production and improves digestive health.

Fennel essential oil – has a natural sweet flavor and has been shown to relieve indigestion and a wide range of stomach issues. It has been used to treat colic, coughs and to reduce stomach cramps. Also, fennel helps cleanse toxins by stimulating the liver and naturally balances hormones.

Fermented Vegetables – sauerkraut and the like have a lot of benefits including probiotics

Fish – wild, not farmed; absolutely no Tilapia – it is garbage.

Fish Oil – a great source of omega-3’s and helps balance hormones.

Flour – pretty much a no. OK. No! Got it? Replace with coconut flour and ... or just get rid of fattening, high sugar desserts—I know this is scary but the sugar bug wears off after 6 weeks of detoxing, believe me. I thought I was stuck with a sweet tooth. Now my mouth rejects sugary foods instantly. Sorry, mom.

Frankincense – Fights cancer, reduces inflammation, boosts immune system, cleanses and detoxes body, improves mood and fights depression, spiritual awareness, fights infections, heals skin of scarring and sunspots and acne.

Fruit – a cup of dark berries per day is good. Small amounts of the rest due to wanting to control your sugar intake. And, no juice—unless it’s the whole fruit being juiced which is still a LOT of sugar. All sugar makes you fat! Most people are not working out hard enough to burn off their sugar intake.

Garlic – fights cancer and heart disease by killing bad viruses, bacteria, parasites. It’s pretty much an anti-all the bad stuff thing: antioxidant, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, anti-coagulant, antiseptic & anti-fungal.

Ginger – eat it. Put the powder in soups and casseroles. Eat the fermented stuff at sushi. Great for your gut.

Ginger essential oil – is one of the most anti-inflammatory oils in the world and can help settle GI distress. Using ginger oil has also been shown to help heal leaky gut and strengthen immunity. Ginger also benefits joint health, reduces anxiety and slows aging.

Grains – find the healthy stuff; not regular breads or even whole grains: some quinoa or black rice.

Hand Sanitizer – do not use them; ever. Wash with warm water and a cleansing oil or soap.

Honey – raw and local in small amounts as a sweetener. It is also an actual food and can help reduce allergies but use in small amounts. It’s a sugar!

Kale – eat this garnish superfood. Very nutrient dense unlike most people’s diets. The weird taste disappears when cooked in soups.

Kombucha – great for probiotics, if you can find clean stuff that isn’t processed or loaded with sugar or other junk.

Lavender oil – Relaxes body and reduces anxiety, heals wound and burns, reduces high blood pressure and cholesterol, relieves insomnia, heals skin disorders, supports hormone balance, balances blood sugar for diabetes.

Lemon oil – Cleanses body and lymphatic system, improves weight loss, can reduce cellulite, improves fatigue, supports immunity, kills bad bacteria, improves mood and reduces anxiety.

Liver – it’s good for… wait for it… cleansing your liver; so eat it! Go beef.

Melaleuca oil – Kills funguses and yeast, eliminates parasitic infections, heals gum disease, improves acne, reduces dandruff and cleans out poison [not sure which ones or how potent].

Myrrh oil – stop murmuring. …

Olive Oil – research the label to make sure no other oils are added, it should smell nice and herby. It should be extra virgin, in a dark bottle and the good stuff will turn a bit cloudy in the fridge because the fat is solidifying. It is still difficult for your body to digest.

Orange peel oil – a powerful citrus fruit that contains d-limonene, which has many benefits, including cleansing and anti-inflammatory benefits. It has also been shown to improve mood, freshen odor and improve metabolic function.

Peanuts – only if you can find them grown in a good way; there is so much processing in most that it ruins any nutritional value they might have. I have been a peanut junkie my whole life. Bummer, now I am mostly cutting them out for real nuts and seeds, not legumes like these.

Pear – a great source of fiber, antioxidants, and electrolytes

Peppermint oil – Improves focus and concentration, supports digestion, relieves muscle aches and pain, fights bad breath and odor, improves breathing by fighting respiratory and sinus infections, anti-viral to fight the flu, reduces nausea and acid reflux and bloating.

Processed anything – NOPE!!! Don’t buy it. Don’t eat it. Don’t touch it. Don’t smell it. Don’t even look at it. Just STOP!

Protein Powder – Whey [not hydrolyzed], some forms of casein and egg. If you can eat enough high quality food, you do not really need this. Read the label to make sure everything is described and no fluff or fillers and no “proprietary blend” B.S. Do some research to make sure what is claimed on the package is really in the product. I trust JYM products.

Quinoa – this is a healthy loofa; I mean, grain.

Rice – Try black if you can find it [Winco bulk] and soak for an hour or more and rinse before cooking. The next best healthy stuff is brown and sprouted, not refined. Eat small amounts due to the insulin spike.

Rosemary essential oil – has been shown to protect the brain and reduce risk of dementia. It also has been shown to improve health of skin, hair, nails and naturally balance hormones.

Salmon – eat it wild, not farmed: most of it in stores is farmed.

Salt – Himalayan is best because of the minerals in it – you actually need some of this. It contains all 84 of the essential elements in the human body. Pure unprocessed sea salt is your second choice.
Sandalwood oil – It helps balance out testosterone levels in both men and women. Rub it on yo’self.

SLEEP – yes, this is a valuable part of your nutrition plan. Tired people tend to eat crap. Don’t eat crap. It’s yucky! If you are hungry late in the evening try one or some of the following: cottage cheese, a small banana, a max of 13 raw unsalted almonds, real turkey, tuna or plain cherries [Authority Nutrition].

Spinach – Loaded with Vitamin K, alkaline, reduces acidity to promote recovery

Sprouted seeds – chia, flax and hemp for smoothies, baking, one-pot meals, etc. as a source of healthy fiber, protein and omega-3s.

Stevia – use this as a natural sweetener instead of the other “S” word IF you can find the pure stuff that is not processed with added garbage that makes it as bad as aspartame [like Truvia = bad]. I no longer eat anything that needs a sweetener added to it.

Sugar – I just don’t. It is fattening and dehydrating. But if you must; pure, unrefined, natural but only in small quantities. Or; replace with coconut sugar. Dextrose is OK post-workout.

Tee Tree oil – great for ….

Thyme essential oil – Natural antimicrobial for fighting infections, Balances hormones, Supports skin health and fights eczema, Supports dental health & a Natural bug spray. It helps benefit the body by producing more progesterone, which helps balance out the body's hormones.

Tobacco - just don't.

Turmeric – [Curcumin] anti-inflammatory; unlike politics. It is a super herb for muscle recovery, anti-inflammatory and a magical healer.

Vegetables – eat a lot of them; dark green is best. Frozen with no added flavors or sauces is best unless you can get stuff within a day or two of picking from a local farm that doesn’t spray poisons on them and do not peal or over wash because the good dirt has healthy bacteria that your body needs for gut health. Supermarket stuff is over 7 days old and losing its vitamin and health benefits. No canned stuff. Raw will leach your protein absorption more than cooked.

Vegetable Oils – No. Get rid of this toxic crap. These were originally a waste product that some executive wanted to find a use for via marketing. See the olive guy above or coconut or grass-fed butter.

Water – pure, filtered, non-tap water; which means a no to most bottled waters & use BPA free containers. Drink half to 2/3 your body weight in ounces each day [example: 150 lb. person needs to drink at least 75 oz. water each day]. Did you know that pure water is dehydrating when not combined with a meal? It needs to have some minerals in it. Stir in some Himalayan salt for better absorption.

I will add more as I learn more. It is a never ending process of learning and growing. The healthier I get, the more I want to improve.

Hey big dude, Stop being a snotty toddler and get healthy.

You are More than Your FEELINGS!

We have made our feelings God.

Morality is now at the whims of fickle human emotions. Something which, I am sure, has never been affected by late night pizza or burrito binging. Our desperate need to be known and loved is masked and hidden beneath the surface by drama, insecurity and neediness. We are not fulfilled or complete in ourselves.

This emotion over logic mania has taken control of the morality of our culture. Feelings have become more valid than reason and fact. YOLO has become the rallying cry to express yourself and behave however you feel like. Urges and unrestrained desires have been let loose at the expense of common sense. Is this a good thing? Have your feelings ever changed? Can our feelings be a good guide for our morality? Why are slander and name-calling an accepted practice used against those who disagree with today’s permissive society? “When the debate is lost, slander becomes the tool of the loser,” Socrates.

If we were to look back through history, would we find this to be a good practice? Are we looking into the future to see what the logical conclusions could lead to? Is what we feel, who we are? We have lost or not yet known what our true identity is. Feelings are not helpful in discovering who we are. My feelings often lie. How about yours? What has led to this moral vacuum of defining ourselves by our urges and emotions?

A massive part of what created the problem is that the church has not demonstrated the love of God to a lost, hurting, broken world; instead, we have been mean and judgmental. We have become the enemy of the world that God so loved He sent His Son for.

I apologize for how I have wounded you. I apologize for how the church has wounded you.

The real enemies of humanity are the demons [not ghosts] who accuse, shame and condemn all of us into a life of fear, hopelessness, self-condemnation and judgment of ourselves and others. They HATE us; all of us. They spew vomit of judgment and hate on all humanity. We need to recognize their voices, tone and messages and stop listening to and obeying those negative messages. Often, they use our own voice to trick us into thinking that these awful thoughts originate with us. That is a clue. If it is a thought that disgusts you, then it is not yours. So flush it and move on.

Because of all this condemnation a huge gap has been created in all of our lives that has left many feeling isolated and alone and unworthy of anyone liking us, let alone loving us. Our feelings, because of all these negative messages have led us to believe we are garbage.

Therefore, we believe crazy ideologies and live like we are mindless junk searching endlessly to fill this gigantic void of unworthiness that is a torrent of sewage flooding through our wounded souls. What a disgusting, sad, devastating and graphic picture that is.

Christians have struggled with all these same issues on a massive scale. I know I did. The first 28 years of my Christian life were an emotional roller coaster because I did not know if God really could accept me or like me. I believed His love was unobtainable to me because of the mess in my mind. I am an example of a follower of Jesus who wanted to do, think and be good but was under the spell and lies of the demons. Unfortunately, I was a typical example of the Christian crowd who was just as screwed up after accepting Jesus as we were when we did not know Him.

Many leaders in the USA churches have so much external pressure to keep up the appearance of holiness that we all miss out on a real and vulnerable relationship with God and people. Instead of focusing on what we are not, we need to focus on Who IS. God is good, holy, pure, gentle, loving, kind, gracious, joy-filled, patient, etc. The Holy Spirit is building us up in all these areas to be like God. God is greater than the enemy who does not want us to grow up in these areas. God is also greater than our church organizational and leadership structures that inhibit truthful relationships with Him. Stop being afraid of God’s holiness and realize He loves you. Jesus would not have died for you if He was not gracious and loving toward who you were, are and are becoming. [That was a good word right there.]

God desires that we walk in a relationship of love with Him and people. We need to stop walking in fear of punishment. God is not ashamed of His children! Wake up! If Jesus is Lord of your life, He LOVES you. Get this.

Can we start looking at what God does want to do in and through us and stop looking at what we have done wrong? God does not focus on what we are not. He focuses on who we will become.

It is not about our feelings. It is about truth. And for all people, not just Christians, truth is a person. Jesus is the Truth. God IS love. They are not feelings. They are God. They are awesome, amazing and wonderful and worthy of worship and adoration. The Holy Spirit is here to teach us to love, hear and obey this fabulous, too fantastic to imagine tri-une God.

You are the answer to Jesus’ prayer in John 17. You’re identity and morality are not about how you feel. It’s about Who you believe and what He thinks about you. You are loved by the only One whose opinion matters. Truth [Jesus] needs to rule feelings so new thoughts and feelings can replace the garbage with the truth. All of our thinking, feelings and morality are drastically altered when we know God is real, loves us and will continually pursue a fantastic relationship with us. That is what set me free. Because of this, I am free to love everyone; even, those who disagree with me or live in a way that I may not like.

I pray that you get free in Jesus knowing He loves you and is pursuing a grand relationship with you. He likes you. He loves you. He came to earth and went to the cross for us. He cares about every aspect of our lives and our identity. He cares so much that He will transform our mind and emotions once we surrender to His love. His love is so good and gentle that it washes away all shame and condemnation. It washes away the desire to continue the unending pursuit to make ourselves happy. Only peace and joy come from knowing Jesus. That is eternal and unchanging.

Do you want to know Jesus? Do you want freedom, rest and joy in your soul? Jesus is the answer to what life is for and about. Jesus is the meaning of life. He is the way, the truth and the life and no one comes into a relationship with God, the Father, except through Jesus [John 14:6]. Let’s walk together to God. Let me help you find peace, joy and meaning. Stop wrestling with your emotions and rest in God.

You are NOT Who You Were

Many Christians need to be saved from their bad theology and beliefs about themselves and how God views them. God is not waiting around to zap you with a shock collar whenever you mess up. It is the accuser that spews shame, guilt and condemnation all over you. That is not God! God thinks about us very differently than we do. That is why He corrects out thinking. He is not in the process of behavioral modification or sin management. Our behavior will change drastically once we realize how ridiculously and lavishly He loves us. Once we are addicted to Him, all other addictions will wash away. Stop holding onto things believing God does not have the power to heal you from brokenness and sin. [OUCH!] “God, I know Jesus died and rose and all, but you cannot fix my problems or deal with my mess. It’s just too much.” Really!? Why do we live like that? “Oh, those other Christians hurt my feelings so much it’s just wounded me to the core and I don’t think I can be around other people without having my walls up to protect me from them.” When we exist like that, we give the demons a stranglehold in us and show the world a powerless faith.

When you choose to surrender to Jesus and turn over your life to Him, a bunch of stuff happens: you die to self, you turn from your sin, you surrender control of your moral choices, you submit your will to God, you seek Him for guidance, you pursue a relationship with Him; God kills your old sin nature and buries it, God places you into Christ giving you a new life, God lovingly rears you as His spiritually newborn child, the Holy Spirit indwells you permanently as the guarantee that you now belong to God, God gives you spiritual gifts so He can pour out His grace to others through you and much more.

You are not a sinner saved by grace but a holy person of God saved by grace for good works He prepared in advance of your existence. The sinner was crucified with Christ and buried in baptism. You were raised to life out of baptism with the resurrection of Jesus and placed into His life. You no longer live for you but for the glory of God. That is God’s will for you!

You are no longer trapped by your past. You no longer need to be a victim of any circumstances or past pain and wounds. You are set free. Will you choose to move forward and believe it? Jesus has set the captives free. That is past tense. It’s time to let go of being so tense [pun. Ha.]. Move into the future. God has a better future for you than you can dream or imagine.

“Jesus didn’t come to redecorate your jail cell. He came to break you out.” [David Wagner, 2016 Prophetic Conference, Bethel Church, March 2016] When talking about Jesus calming the storm David says, “Jesus is not reacting and responding. He is ruling and reigning.”

In place of abandonment, you have been adopted. You are not fatherless but a child of God and His family forever.

You are no longer broken. You have been born again [anew] spiritually.

Your foundation was crumbled but you were crucified so you could realize you are cherished. God proved His love for you once and for all at the cross. Stop wondering or doubting!

You are not damned, doomed or defeated. You have been delivered.

You are no longer God’s enemy. This all should be exciting and make you enthusiastic [“en theos” = in God].

God is not frustrated, angry or despairing over humanity. He already took care of sin. We need to surrender to Him and be transformed by His love. We need to understand how He sees us and understand our position in Christ due to the resurrection. We need to stop acting like we are nailed to the cross vainly attempting to pay for our own sin. It is time to start living on this side of the empty tomb.

We are not in a survival culture. We are in a revival culture. [David Wagner]

Don’t tolerate something Jesus came to terminate. [David Wagner]

·         “Depressed Christians are like the Dead Sea. Nothing flows out of an inward focused person.  So everything in the sea is dead: fear, anxiety, discouraged, depressed. Even praying about our rottenness is self-centered as it is focused on who we aren’t instead of Who He is!  It’s just as bad as braggadocio arrogance.  What is true humility?” [Bill Johnson, The Resting Place – sermon]

We are not powerless victims. And God does not answer our prayers when we pray like we are. In fact, that is not prayer; it is just whining and complaining which Graham Cooke calls the “worship language of hell.” And, when we pray from a position of offense, wounds, frustration, envy or self-seeking, every evil work is present; which means when a person prays from those they are inviting in the demons who they think they are binding. God wasn’t so tired, frustrated and fed up with people that He sent His Son. He so loved us! [This paragraph is a summary from teachings by Dan Mohler.]

We cannot serve, minister or pray from a place of wounds expecting God to do anything good with that mess. If we have died with Christ, then we no longer have rights that must be met for us to feel good about ourselves and need no longer be offended or wounded. Our old selfish flesh has died with Christ and we are now living through Him because we have been placed into His life at our death. We need the old guy to stay dead!

We are not empowering people when we sympathize with their brokenness. We need to tell them who they are in Jesus and that they do not need to be broken or crushed. Let’s pray because of the promise, not the problem. Jesus didn’t come so we could get a blessing but so we could be transformed by being born again. [Dan Mohler]

We were not made for ourselves. We were made for God. We were made to be transformed into the people of God who shine the light of God into the darkness. We were never intended to be self-seeking and find ourselves or pursue happiness. It is only by dying to these that we come to life in Him. When we die to ourselves, no one has the power to offend us. We can live from His love and pour out life on the broken world. Imagine how freeing it is to not be overcome by the negativity of other people’s emotions. “We are not what we did. We are what He did.” [Dan Mohler inspired much of this paragraph] “We are not Lot’s wife, so let’s stop looking back. We are the bride of Jesus, so let’s look to Him.”

2 Corinthians 5: You ARE a new creature in Christ. The old passed away [DIED]. Be the new you, the true you designed by Jesus before the foundations of the galaxies. He has reconciled us so we can be ambassadors of this good news and reconcile a lost world to Jesus. Jesus became sin so we could become the righteousness of God.

Stop being a caterpillar moping around slowly in depression and dissatisfaction with your circumstances and feelings. Do not be ruled by either of those fickle things. Like a butterfly, you are something new and glorious to display the majesty of God. You were not created to get your emo needs met. You were created to love. You were loved first. Now go walk in that truth and be love to others.

Let’s start living out of who we ARE!

“Father, thank You for Your unstoppable love for me!”

Why Did God Make Humans Male & Female?

Hi. I love you. God loves you and thinks highly of you. Please read my prior posts about the tree of life so you know where I am coming from. I want to speak life and hope to you while building you up into the best you that you can be. God made you the way you are for many reasons; only some of which you will find out in this earthly body.

Can we have a conversation about why God made humans male and female?

Before we get going I want to lay down some ground rules. Please read this in a tone of love and respect. I am not angry or judgmental but calm and gentle. I may not know you but God does. He cares deeply for you and thought of you before He made the first stars. [That was a sentence my daughter received from God as a gift about what He thought of her.] He knew you by name then! He wants to have a relationship with you and show you how much He thinks of you and why He designed you the way He did. Your parents participated in your creation through a short, intimate, pleasurable act, but God spent time contemplating you before He created time. And, He knit your cells together in your mother’s womb as He fashioned you into the amazing human you now are. You are that valuable. Now to the subject matter for this blog.

Lisa Bevere, "What is our culture doing right now? They are trying to get the men to be more feminine and the women to be more masculine. They are moving both genders away from their position of strength. But we need men to be men and women to be women because gender captures the image of God." [2016 Prophetic Conference, Bethel Church, March 2016]

Do you remember the days when people of the same sex could be good friends without anybody wondering if they were sexually attracted to or involved with one another? Why is everything so hyper-sexualized in our society that we cannot just have friends of the same or opposite sex without someone wondering something? Why does every TV show have everyone sexually involved with everybody? When did people forget that there was more to life than a fleeting physical encounter with every breathing human? That is part of the problem. We have made sex our god, our idol, our primary pursuit and goal in life. Is there more to life than that?

In 1st world countries, we have a very confused view of masculine and feminine. Part of this is because we have a lot of time to think about this stuff while we gorge ourselves from our full fridges and stare at our electronic device screens since we are very prosperous compared to 2nd & 3rd world nations. But the primary reason for this confusion is because of the choice made in the Garden of Eden to eat from the tree of the “knowledge of good and evil” when that was the only thing that God told Adam NOT to do. If we had received instruction from God about what is good and evil then we would all have the same knowledge from Him about right and wrong. Instead, we all have a very self-centered view of good and evil based on our experiences and perceptions. This sin in the garden led to instant spiritual death and separation from God. He has been pouring His love and redemption out on humanity ever since. He could have always been pouring out justice as the punishment for sin that we deserved, but He most often gave grace and mercy instead. We, however, have still been running away and seeking our own versions of good and evil doing and thinking whatever we have wanted in vain attempts to satisfy our broken souls.

What if we could learn His view about these things and get a new start? What if we could hear from Him about His design for them and how He wants to bless us with His presence so we can become all He intends for us to be? Here is one of the most significant passages from the New Testament about the differences between male and female.

Ephesians 5:15-33
1)       Husband – Love your wife as Christ loved the Church! Jesus died for His bride.
2)       Wife – Submit to and respect your husband as to Christ the head of the Church! [Don’t freak out about the submit word. Keep reading to see why it is a nice word and not an oppressive one. You will also see that the respect word is a good thing too.]

Here is the most clarifying passage for how males and females express the love of God in different ways. This is where the image of God from Genesis 1 & 2 is explained. This is how human marriage is supposed to work. There is equality of person-hood. There are differing roles. Males and females are vastly different. We look, think, converse, play, relate and behave differently. Males and females express love differently. Redeemed people, followers of Jesus, are in the process of becoming more like what Paul describes in this passage. All people reflect some of this. It is in our image of God DNA which is spiritual and not our physical flesh; although, that does tell us which one we are. If your body does not easily clarify if you are male or female, ask God what His original design for you was, then quietly wait and listen for a gentle, kind, loving and affirming voice to answer. Don’t listen to the voice of discouragement, shame and condemnation—that one is not God.

Remember the broken part of women from Genesis 3 where the curse is described? [Stop here and read that chapter if it is not familiar to you.] She will struggle with her role as the perfect companion to the male. She will either be too bossy or too submissive. Her original and easier role in life is to be nurturing and supportive; that is part of the God DNA for the feminine portrayal of love. Females struggle less with this than males. It is natural for most females to be encouraging. Women just love to love in a caring, edifying way. They are good at that.

Cattiness comes from brokenness which is fueled from a jealous mess in a scared soul. The broken part of the feminine is in the areas of submission and respect. The submit thing could take years, perhaps a lifetime to unravel because in her rebellion, the female soul either despises this or craves it too much. The true way of looking at it is to submit to her husband as the leader of the family. This does not mean women submit to all men! This means in the marriage, the leadership and responsibility falls primarily on the male. The female is the helper, supporter, companion, encourager as God was to Israel in the Hebrew Scriptures. Wow! Did He ever put up with a lot of crap! I hope I am better to my wife than Israel was/is to God.

God helps us learn to love. The wife helps the husband in the same way. Sometimes this means getting all up in his business...in private. [That piece of brilliant wisdom will save you thou$ands in counseling.] The unnatural part of this whole thing is thrown in at the end of verse 33, where this submission is explained as respect. This is difficult for women. Nurturing love--that is easy. Treating her husband with respect (value, honor, dignity, deference), that is difficult. Just ask marriage counselors. This can only be done well by the help of The Helper, The Holy Spirit. His role here is similar to that of the wife to the husband. It is not being a doormat. It is a magnificent and holy role that pictures the relationship between Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It portrays God and the way He loves and relates. This submission and respect turns a weak man into a knight in shining armor who will take on the world to bless his female. Respect brings out in a male what only a woman can root out of his wounded soul. It turns a coward into a warrior. It transforms fragility into powerful strength. It makes him into something much greater than he ever dreamed he could become.

An issue I am wrestling with now follows: I have seen numerous females choose a relationship with a bad-boy type believing they can change him. Is that the intent of this passage? Nope. Vast numbers of women have gotten into abusive relationships believing they can help the male become who he is capable of becoming: a hero, an honorable warrior for truth and justice. I am starting to understand why women fall into this cycle based on the above. But should they take on the fixing role with a bad-boy? I certainly do not want anybody in an abusive relationship. Women need boundaries that protect them from abuse. Will they listen to wisdom from others and not get into these toxic relationships? Is there a level of wounded-ness in a male where a woman should be counseled to just walk away? Who will help these women with wise guidance? Who will they listen to? Is that you? Get help from women and counselors who love Jesus and are not judgmental.

Here is another issue I am wrestling with: Why is there so little acceptance of masculinity in the church? Read the lyrics to the worship music of the last 100 years and tell me where it appeals to males. It seems as if it is all targeted at females and their psyche. I don’t get into smooch-woochy, flowery, soft, gentle songs about how God took my fear. I can’t relate. Also, the culture of the USA seems to be at war with the masculine. Boys are medicated at a monstrous rate to calm and pacify them so they will behave like sweet little tame, quiet girls. One article from 2001 stated that North America consumed 95% of the world’s Ritalin. Of course, we do not have a prescription drug problem in this country:

Why do we need to medicate ourselves out of consciousness? And we know we don’t have an alcohol or illegal drug problem! And now marijuana is available for all because we just do not like to be fully aware and awake. This is not completely a masculine problem but is part of the bigger mess, just hang with me as we travel this windy road of my logic. There is a dislike in the USA for the acceptance of normal, godly, honorable masculinity that is an underlying cause for many of these problems. More men would be part of churches if they were allowed to actually be men! I am so tired of being sissified in order to fit into the USA and church cultures. What if men could be men? Wouldn’t that be cool?! There sure would be a lot more of them in churches then.

I went to the Azusa Now revival prayer meeting in the Los Angeles Coliseum on April 9, 2016 [five days ago]. Some friends I was with connected with two men from New Zealand. I had a conversation with one of them, Mike, about this subject after he stated that he could see that I had a warrior spirit and presence. I heartily agreed. He said he did too and it was part of his [Maori] tribal culture. He told stories about why the British lost so many battles to the outnumbered and under weaponized tribes in New Zealand. He described the sounds of the warrior music that was missing in the church. He then told me about the ‘haka’ warrior dances. Later I saw him greet another New Zealander by doing a ‘hongi.’ Mike took off his hat and sun glasses, leaned in and they touched their foreheads and noses with their eyes closed and breathed in deeply through their noses. It was powerful and deep and I had no idea what it was. Mike told me that it was a greeting for those who honor one another and the breathing in was taking in the essence of the brother which pointed back to God creating Adam and breathing life into his lungs. It was stunning and masculine and powerful. It struck a chord in my masculine chest. Man! I wish we could be men!

Now back to the Ephesians text:

The larger and seemingly more difficult demands of this passage are for the man to love his wife like Jesus loved the church, built her up, nurtured her and died for her. It is easy for men to pour out respect. This is why they usually focus well on work, tasks [fixing stuff/problems] and sports. Males have to learn nurturing love. This love purifies her soul. It blossoms her into the lovely flower she can become only by receiving this love from a male. The princess needs a prince to unwrap the beauty in her soul. My wife tells me she wants honesty, integrity, love, provision, protection, a man seeking Jesus all the time and to feel enveloped. Picture an eagle standing near his mate with his wings spread around her in protection and glaring at the enemies desiring to harm her screaming like Gandalf in the 1st Lord of the Rings movie, "You shall NOT pass!" [Yes, I know the irony of this actor’s homosexual life choices in this paragraph but I am meaning the character in the movie, not the actor.] The proper and whole male does not use his physical strength to cause submission. He does not use his strength against her to gain respect and he cannot get respect by demanding it. [That is a note to thugs too. Holla!] He pours out gentleness and nurtures her with a tenderness since he is like a bull and she is like a china shop [priceless, delicate and extremely valuable; not fragile]. He draws out the inner beauty. He is first drawn toward her external beauty and curves and then moves into her soul because she has captivated his. His love removes blemishes from her soul, it looks past her wrinkles and stretch-marks. When the male loves the female he learns to love himself and stop condemning himself for all his flaws and frailty. And, here in verse 31 the male is told to leave his parents and hold fast to his wife, his woman, and become one body, mind and soul. He cannot become the best husband possible while remaining a mamma’s boy/brat/baby.

Then Paul throws an unexpected curve ball. It's all about Jesus. This marriage talk is really about how Jesus relates to the church, His bride. The church is supposed to love, respect, obey and submit to Jesus because He poured out His human life to redeem her and make her become who she could only become through His love and sacrifice.

God made male and female so we could have an earthly metaphor for how to relate to Him. God Himself is a community, a family. When we go a different way than the above, we choose our emotions or urges above how God has revealed Himself to us in the Bible. His truth is one of love, not punishment. God is not punishing us by designing family to be a heterosexual unit. Nowhere in the Bible is there ever condoning of any other marital unit. Polygamy is seen regularly in the Hebrew Bible [Old Testament] because the wealthy and many kings had the power to choose that against God’s directives and society’s norms. None of those stories ended well. Most of the stories in the Hebrew Bible are there to show the warts and failures of humans while God is still revealing Himself as faithful and loving.

Our modern arguments for same-sex relationships are not bringing about healthy and whole humans and families. If we were objective we would see the truth that they are not. I have observed this in several relationships close to me. The sad statistics of abuse, diseases, depression and addiction are all over the web, but mostly ignored because it does not fit with current politics and Hollywood’s great values system. Shouldn’t we wonder about any type of morality pushed by Hollywood which then influences Washington D.C.? Nations that have had legal same-sex marriage for over a decade prove this too. But our urges and emotions scream louder for our rights than our desire to seek a better and wiser way. Too often we are controlled by our feelings; which is one of our other gods. If this paragraph has set you on emotional fire, that is not my intent. Would you still be open to friendship with me? I am for you. Unless we go to the tree of life together, we will disagree over this. That, however, does not mean that I have ill feelings toward or am afraid of you. I love you enough to desire to walk toward Jesus with you whether you ever agree with me or not.

We all have areas where we need work. We all need blind spots lovingly exposed by those who care for us. I care for you. I am sure you can help me in many ways too. Let’s do this life together. Let’s seek the best way together and see why God made us the way He did. He fashioned us to receive and give His love and grace. We are each unique and wonderful. Can we change the way things are discussed in the USA? Can we be kind, gentle and loving? My heart is tender toward those who disagree with me. I do not pity them. I am not afraid of them. I do not condemn them. I do not call them names or vilify them. Whoever you are, I love, honor and respect you. You are worth more than you know. You are an amazing, powerful, wonderful, precious treasure. Jesus went to the cross scorning its shame because of the joy set before Him: a reconciled relationship with us. Seek Him and pursue Him with all your strength and energy.

Let’s become everything we are supposed to be as our artistic Creator captivates our souls with His healing love and kindness. God made males and females to reflect differing aspects of His awesome-ness. Let’s be the awesome He designed.

Wholeness Leads to Holiness

I just read a bunch of obituaries for people named Scott Coleman. That was weird. So many of them were younger than I am now. I guess it's time for me to die now too.

Before meeting Jesus I was wholly dead in sin and existed to attempt; endlessly I might add, to satisfy my own desires. I was completely self-absorbed with finding myself, creating my own meaning, pursuing happiness, doing good so that I might feel better about myself. I was hope-less. I couldn’t solve my problems and find the answer(s) to my rest-less-ness.

When Jesus died on the cross, I was crucified there with Him. I was supposed to die to myself in order to allow Him to live through me. I needed to wholly die so I could be re-created and born anew as His child. He is the Life, thus I needed to be put into His life completely and quit working toward my own desires. I needed to stop attempting to die to self and just die. As Graham Cooke says, “Stop trying to play dead, and stay dead.” Quit dying. Die! That’s the only way to become a new creature. I cannot keep wrestling around inside the cocoon. I need to get out of it and celebrate being made into something else entirely.

This was not fully realized until after being a follower of Jesus for 28 years. I was stuck in the evangelical rut of attempting holiness by human effort without the presence and work of the Holy Spirit; even though, I knew I needed Him and desired Him.

Once I realized the old broken, sinful guy was dead, I no longer needed to attempt to fix him anymore. I did not need to work so hard to stop sinning or manage my behavior. I just needed to die and be buried.  “You cannot fix a negative by focusing on it” [Graham Cooke, again]. The whole old me had to be crucified, die and stay buried. Once all the old junk was dead, I was free to no longer put makeup on the corpse to make it falsely appear publicly presentable. I needed to be raised to a new life in Christ realizing the old nature had been crucified and no longer had any power… unless, I went back to it and gave in to the garbage of the past. But I am set free from that junk.

I was then filled with the Holy Spirit and marked with Him as the guarantee that I was now wholly owned by Jesus Who purchased me. I was set free. Over a night I was changed and continue to change. I could now allow Him to live His life through me. I gave Him sin and brokenness. He died for it. He gave me the Holy Spirit and life. What a great trade for me! The Holy Spirit now teaches me how to live out His fruit so He can bear it through me. Finally! I have been wholly set free to be holy. “Be holy, as I am holy.” This is a loving and doable command as God indwells and lives through me. Thanks for the transition and transformation, Lord. You are awesome!

Now I am hope-more. Less is gone and replaced with more. Doubt is destroyed. Peace has come. Rest is the best 4-letter word. Oh, I guess LOVE is good too.

And… And you can have all this too. Ask. Seek. Knock. Talk to God. Wait for Him to answer. He is good and He loves you greatly. He holds before you the great exchange: Jesus’ died for our sin and God’s wrath toward sinners so that we can enter His life when we turn from our old busted-ness, brokenness, sinfulness, selfishness and pride. Have you made the great exchange?

Let me know if you need help. I love you because He loves you.

How Not to Lead

This is snarky, tongue-fully-in-cheek, but unfortunately rather commonly accurate. This does not apply only to the business world, but I have observed these dysfunctional traits in many non-profit environments as well.
  • Talk bad about whichever team member is not present so you can make yourself look better to whomever you are talking with.
  • Talk to your other leaders and not with. Run them over with your power and superior intelligence.
  • Tell people why you are better than everyone else.
  • Pout and be domineering. Stare and glare so all will be aware of your power, passion and authority.
  • Don’t respond to e-mails or return phone calls.
  • Do your best to keep communication to a minimum.
  • Show up late to everything because you are so important and busy. And just for fun, sometimes… cancel important meetings without notifying anyone.
  • Always explain why you are right and make excuses when caught in not following through as you said you would.
  • Do the opposite of this: Steve Jobs famously said, “It doesn’t make sense to hire smart people and tell them what to do; we hire smart people so they can tell us what to do.” Since you ignore this, create detailed job descriptions that waste people’s talents and skills while you force them to fit into your broken mismatched puzzle. Stifle them. Turn them into your team of “yes, men” automatons.
  • Do not show appreciation for jobs well done.
  • Focus on a few trees and never look at the whole forest: micro manage, put out campfires while ignoring forest fires [tyranny of the urgent; ignore the truly important].
  • Only giver performance reviews annually so people have no idea how they are doing and cannot correct issues or perform better [continue this archaic process because that’s how it’s always been done].
  • Don’t learn new ways to lead and motivate.
  • Rule like a king over your silo fiefdom. Rule from the rear with a whip. Demand more always. Never celebrate even massive growth, success, profitability. More!
  • “Do as I say, not as…”
  • Don’t teach people how to learn from their mistakes, just point out their flaws to the rest of the team so all will be afraid to fail; and therefore, not really attempt anything great.
  • And, as soon as they fail, never let them move beyond that. Brand them a failure and do not give them another chance.
  • Confuse time at the office with productivity. Demand ridiculous and unnecessarily long hours in the building. “Are you the job?”
  • Do the opposite of this to:

  • Expect everyone to do everything you say without actually assigning anyone the task.
Follow these methods if you want to damage your team. They are not subordinates to be slaves. In case you missed the point: Don't lead like this! In most cases, do the opposite. If you see yourself in any of these: Stop it! Get therapy. Get help. Allow kind-hearted people to speak into your life. Be open to growing, changing and learning to think differently. We are all in process, so let's make progress.

What Does Tree of Life Ministry Look Like?

Let’s expand on the prior blog and hone in on how to live and serve from the tree of life. Our goal will be to learn to love all people with the love that God has given to those who believe in and follow Jesus. The people of God’s Kingdom need to become free to love and pour life into everyone in their lives; especially, those who consider us their enemy or just act like it. We need to be like Jesus in how He lived, taught, prayed, served and loved. We need to be free from shame, guilt and condemnation. God has and will continue pouring His love into us, He has sealed us with the Holy Spirit as the guarantee that we are His. That is our catalyst to kill doubt, worry and fear so we love one another and shine the light of Jesus. That will expose the darkness. We do not need to stand firm in judgment and condemnation. Loving the world like Jesus did (John 3:16-18) is the best medicine for a sin sick world that does not yet know and adore Him. Let’s get rid of our old flawed ways of doing church and outreach ministry and then move into being a much needed tree of life people.

First, we start with some further explanation of why the tree of the knowledge of good and evil is not a good ministry guide. There is good. There is evil. There is knowledge. There is truth which means there are also falsehoods and lies. There is darkness but there is also light. There is terror and wonder; fear and awe. There are many opposing forces in this wisdom literature that describes creation in Genesis chapters 1-3. Where then do we land? Which side are we on? How are we to live? How do we discern truth and error? What determines the methods for guiding our thoughts and judgements? Surely, we are all making millions of judgements throughout our lives and hundreds daily. What foundation leads and guides us to make these decisions? And how can we know we are doing well with our choices? Are we choosing wisely? Do our choices lead to The Good?

As a follower of Jesus I will be addressing this from the perspective of a believer in Him, in His life, death, burial, resurrection and all His teachings that we have before us in the Bible. Most Christians want to be faithful to the Bible and teach it accurately. Are we reading it from the tree of life perspective or a rule oriented one? I hope my previous post revealed how easy it is for us to fall into the tree of the knowledge of good and evil methods which DO NOT lead to life.
Here is what I have seen in the churches in the USA. It is the standard method for most people and churches to minister, guide and teach from a tree of the knowledge of good and evil perspective. Have you ever met a person who was transformed by being nagged, shamed, guilted, controlled or manipulated? Does that method cause people to joyfully become the best they can be? Law followers produce law followers. Where is the Spirit and transformation of the soul in this? A relationship with the rules leads to unrest as one attempts to hold fast to all the regulations. How much good and peace is found in the headlines of Yahoo, Google, MSN, etc.? Watch the weather report on the news and listen to how the other hosts complain; no matter what the report is! The weather happening now was desired two days ago but now that it is happening it is bad; almost evil. How much joy is there in all this complaining about everything? Have you noticed that most opinion writings are all about the negative? We are doing that here too. Once finished explaining all these negatives and why they do not transform lives we will move in the opposite direction. Hang in there. I love and respect you.

The blog link below was some early development of the concepts discussed above and in the previous post.

Is the church of Jesus doing things much different than the media in its condemnation of those with whom it disagrees? Will all the mudslinging in politics and religion bring about good in the other side? The making and braking of moral laws will be endless until hearts are changed. Fighting over desired rights will not win friends or save souls.

What is accomplished by focusing on good and evil? Well, we find the evil and wrongs everyone does. We all become prosecutors pointing out all the wicked that people do. We become highly skilled at finding the wrong. Our broken human nature is magnificent at discovering the bad in others. A sad irony is that what we yell about the loudest in others is often a major flaw we despise in ourselves but don’t work on since it is simpler to just point it out in others as bad. No wonder trust in others and faith in God are so difficult! We are sooooo busy catching others in their sin against us, that we come to the false conclusion that God too must be flawed and unworthy of trust. Ouch! Is there any doubt left in your soul that living from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil only leads to frustration and despair?

The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually fearing you will make one.”― Elbert Hubbard [a self-proclaimed anarchist; which is also what he considered Jesus]

“A church that’s totally focused on the old nature only sees sin, faults, and wrong behaviors in people. All it can produce is a negative mindset that can only produce a negative outcome. It deals with problems, it doesn’t deal with solutions. It creates a religious spirit that makes God in its image so that it can release anger and judgment. It also withholds all the things that God actually wants to release and wants to be for people.” (from Brilliant Leadership by Graham Cooke)

There are many churches that believe their intentions are good while their practice is sin management; merely behavioral control over the people through peer pressure, membership contracts or domineering leadership. This chokes the life out of believers and explains why many people are “done” with the church but not with Jesus. I was not brought to life by pastors and elders. For over 25 years I was part of the evangelical community that practiced focusing on the Bible as the word of God while being inhibited in communicating with the living Word [Logos] of God, Jesus. Church statistics about people leaving the church are devastating yet most leaders blame it on the maturity level of the people who left; which of course, is a judgement from the first tree. I have yet to see or hear a pastor take any blame for their part in why people flee their leadership. Why is it never their fault? That is just like Adam and Eve in the garden when confronted. My spiritual growth was squelched, stifled, even strangled out of me by successful numerically growing church pastors who believed in their methods and good intentions.

Is the American church bringing life to our nation? Is the culture changing for the positive by our methods? Are people who do not know Jesus wanting to know Him because of how the church behaves? Isn’t it interesting that any pastor not using the above methods is seen as an ear tickler who doesn’t preach the whole gospel? What if Joel Osteen is more correct in his ministry method than they are? How many people don’t have an internal sense of falling short, being imperfect or being riddled with self-condemnation? Is anybody out there depressed? Why is it that someone with a lot of joy is seen as the out-of-touch lunatic? Shouldn’t that rather be the norm for followers of Jesus, the joy giver?

Please now go with me as we switch trees. Our natural, fallen and broken inclination is to stay with the tree we have been discussing above. That wore me out just writing about all that negative junk. Aren’t you sick of it too?

But God desires relationship with us. He does not desire us to merely be rule followers. That is not why He created us. Did you know that in the glorious depiction of heaven at the end of the Bible there is no tree of the knowledge of good and evil? We will not need it there. We have God to explain things rightly. In Revelation 22:1-2 there is a river of the water of life flowing from the throne [singular] of God and the Lamb [Jesus] and on both sides of it are a tree of life producing 12 kinds of fruit and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of nations. Let’s live out of the power and glory of that! All kinds of fruit that brings life and even the leaves bring healing. How different is that from the other tree that led to sin, judgement and death? I am just learning what it means to live and minster from this tree of life.

Because I now know I have been transformed, the old man is crucified, dead and buried; therefore, I am not controlled by sin. Ian Clayton says, “I don’t sin because I must not. I don’t sin because I don’t want to.” I am a new creature in Christ (2 Corinthians 5). Freedom from sin management allows freedom to live a life of love where sin no longer entangles. Temptation can still be shot at us as arrows from the enemy but they can be easily deflected by looking unto the Lover of our soul Who sets us free. The river of the water of life flows from the throne forever. Let’s go there and drink from it and eat from the fruit of the tree of life. Let’s now wrestle with what that means and looks like.

Immorality

Jesus’ name means “YHWH saves.” He is the “I Am” Who spoke to Moses. He is the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6). He is the creator and sustainer of all life and creation. He is God Who became a human in order to pay the price for Adam and Eve’s choice to break the one and only rule given in the garden. God loves us so much that He gave us the choice to reject Him. He paved the way toward reconciliation by His own death on a tree. He died because we were already dead. We all are spiritual zombies apart from Him serving our own selfish desires and wrong definitions of good and evil. Jesus’ death is good for us; thus, Good Friday. He died when we were at our worst (Romans 5:8-10) to set us free and prove how much He loves and values us. That love is amazing and astonishing. He gives us His human life to pay for our spiritually and morally dead existences. Why would He do that? Why would He pour out His life to pay the just penalty we deserved in order to bestow us with lavish, prodigal grace?

“Grace does not overlook sin.  It empowers righteousness.” Bill Johnson

What is the goal of tree of life ministry all about? How about LIFE!? How about LOVE?! Jesus is The LIFE. God is LOVE. How are we to treat and think about people so that we pour life and love into them?

Is God big and powerful and gracious enough to save the likes of: Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Caitlyn Jenner, Kanye West, Miley Cyrus, Barack Obama, any Kardashian, Oprah, any Bush, Muslims, Masons, Mormons, any murderer, any actor, any rock or metal bands, anybody in ISIS, your ex-pastor, your ex-spouse, the person who sexually used or abused you, your disobedient child, your boss, your ex-boss, the person who cheated you, the IRS, the person who got your promotion, the kid that beat up your kid, me, you? The answer is, “Yes.” And, He has given us the Holy Spirit which empowers us to love them. Jesus wants to spend time with all of them pouring love and life into them. That is what He did on earth. That is what He wants us to do with the Holy Spirit empowering us. Does that bring up some angst or holy excitement?

Because we are free from sin, death, wrath and punishment; then, we are free to give away the same grace we have received. We are free to love. We need not point out all the wrongs people are doing. We are to pour out all the love we have received. Instead of killing them with a truth of their sin. We are giving them life via love. We are not the judgers. They already stand judged before God and in prison to their flesh. We do not condone or approve of sin. We are to be like Jesus and set the captives free through love which yields life. After people receive life, then it will make sense to them to address their behaviors and thoughts. We can then teach them to hear from God so He can deal with their stuff. We still are to love them in spite of it.

Jesus rebuked the religious elite of Israel for missing the entire point of the Law. Jesus loved the sinners. He healed the broken. He ate with the people despised by the religious leaders. He hung out with them [sorry for the bad pun. Is that where that phrase came from?]. He called as His apostles religious failures who were not qualified to be rabbis. They were mostly fishermen, a wild zealot and an IRS agent! They were trained and qualified by Jesus through their failures and empowered by His love. They did not step down from ministry every time they screwed up so they could earn back the right to serve. Jesus broke the religious rules of the day. AND, He was the Law giver in the first place!! Wake up Pharisees and Sadducees. He healed on the Sabbath. He chose friends over ritual. He gave life and love rather than religion and a good reputation. When we lead like this people will be transformed by love and thus fulfill the qualifications of deacons and elders via the life that is poured into them.

How are we doing? Jesus healed people from demonic oppression and diseases. I would rather pursue being part of doing that than call out people’s imperfections. We are not to do the Holy Spirit’s work of convicting. Are we to do more than just talk? Is there power that undergirds our words and action? If we feed the homeless and clothe the poor, do we do that out of love or pity? What motivates us? Are we loving those who desire to be our enemies? Do we think well of them because we disallow ourselves to think of them as an enemy? Flesh and blood are not the enemy as Paul states in Ephesians 6. If God’s kindness leads to repentance (Romans 2:4), then isn’t that the method we should choose? Let’s do the greater works that Jesus said we would (John 14:12). Surely that is more than preaching and holding classes.

Larry Randolph, "Jesus never gave his disciples authority over people. He only gave them authority over things that hurt people." That is an amazing thought! Church leaders sure don’t act that way. They exercise authority over people all the time, and sometimes doing the “lording over” that Jesus told them not to. “I am the pastor. I have the vision from God. Do what I say.” That disallows God to speak through others and puts a ridiculous amount of pressure on that pastor. You can read about my thoughts on this in the below link:

Are we being gentle? Do we live out the fruit [singular] of the Spirit? The list in Galatians 5 has nine items which make up the one fruit. That’s the stuff of life the Holy Spirit produces. We need to participate with Him in growing that life in people. What are those 12 types of fruit on the tree of life in Revelation 22? The tree of life gives food and healing. We are to nourish. We are to make people whole so they can become holy. We do this through pouring honor, respect, grace and love into them. This yields life and freedom. We are to call out the good that people struggle to see in themselves. They already know their dirt and muck so we don’t address or focus on that. We are to unearth the gold and jewels. We build them up so they reflect the light of God. We teach them they are new in Christ, that the old is dead and gone so they stop focusing on sin and begin focusing on fruit. This brings transformation.

Do the work of ministry that yields the fruit of righteousness. We are seated with Christ. We have all we need for godliness. The old ways have passed away. Jesus saves, heals and loves. His kindness and forgiveness opens the prison doors so we live as His beloved children longing to set others free too. Our life of joy, peace and rest will shine light into a dark world. When our relationship with God becomes desirable to others, they will then thirst for this water of life and the food from the tree of life along with the healing from its leaves. Oh, so many metaphors for the love and goodness of God! We must be free and transformed before others will believe us and want it for themselves.

What do we need to do believe, think and do differently so the lost will desire to be saved? How do we need to be the church differently so believers will be excited to love and serve? How do we free people to become all that God sees in them and desires them to be? Offer life. Be love.

      I love and respect you.
